Welcome to the North Cape

Today we slept in a National Park near Inari. There was crazy many mosquitos as long as we parked in the sun, so we decided to move to a more shadowy place. With the help of a lot of spray, sprayed on the mosquito nets and Matea’s “Geissenstecker” we had a peaceful night without any mosquitos in the Van. As every morning Matjaz stood up first and made a walk in the nature.

Around 8:30 I tried to wake our children, what was as difficult as every day. In the evening they do not want to go to bed, and in the morning, they do not want to stay up. But today we wanted to go far north, so they had to stay up. After breakfast we went into the direction of Norway.

In all the Corona times I was always most worried about crossing the border to Norway, what also showed itself as problematic. Even though we all had Corona certificates besides Hanna, who is too young to get the vaccination, we had because of her the most trouble. So, we had to register her on the border and then she had to take the Corona test, which was luckily for free. We were not allowed to enter Norway before we did not have her test result (15 minutes). So now we know, at the moment we are free of Corona and I hope it will stay so forever.

Now we could finally continue our way north. We followed for many kilometers the straight roads. Already soon after the Norwegian border we realized a change in the landscape.

It got hilly, the trees got smaller and smaller until there started a kind of steppe – grasses, smaller bushes and low fir trees or birches. Our way was again several times interrupted by a group of reindeers grazing next to the street or lazily crossing it. But we also saw a group of sheep sleeping on the street and carefully maneuvered our van around not to disturb their slumber.

The street to the north cape follows the coast from the town Lakselv, so we drove along the Porsangen fjord further north. The North Cape is on an island, called Mageroya. To the island there is a tunnel, which is leading under the sea. First two kilometers we drove downhill, from then on we had to drive uphill. I never saw such a strong hill in the tunnel. In the middle of it we met a biker, I really hope he had an e-bike, because this hill was Never-ending.

In the last days I was following the weather forecast carefully and we hurried that we would come to the North cape still today, since it was the last day shown sunshine all the time. But when we drove over Mageroya there was a grey layer of fog pulling over the country.

At the beginning the fog was just for some kilometers and I was relieved when it disappeared, but as nearer we came to our aim the foggier it got and when we finally parked our camper at the North Cape visitor center we had a visibility of about 20 meters.

We parked our camper with great Sea view (in case the fog is going to disappear). Then we visited the Visitor center. There is a tunnel, that leads to the Cave of lights, where we saw how the life on North Cape is changing according to the seasons. There we found information about the history of this place. After dinner in the camper, we watched a 20-minute report about life on North Cape and now we decided to try to sleep. We are still hoping that in the night the fog is going to lift, or that it would be blown away. At the moment (over the fog) there is midnight sun, so we decided, that in case the sun is going to come out, we will stay up and watch.
